Did you know?: You Don't Know Jack is back

Since the 2004 release of the relatively small You Don't Know Jack 6: The Lost Gold, our favorite fast-paced, irreverent, slightly-adult PC quiz show series has unfortunately lay dormant. No more! This month saw the premiere of YouDontKnowJack.com, and the Daily DisOrDat -- a two-minute, Flash-based matching quiz updated every weekday with You Don't Know Jack's trademark voice acting and comic pacing.
Being online means the questions can be a little more topical than the dated references in the classic disc games. Today's quiz is about Donald Rumsfeld, for instance, and gamers might find this quiz oddly familiar. What's more, the setups are genuinely funny, and there are quite a few laugh-out-loud moments to be found in the archives.
We're not one to look a gift horse in the mouth or anything, but we can't help but imagine the possibilities for online versions of other Jack favorites like Gibberish Questions or even the Jack Attack. And would some multiplayer modes have killed them? I mean Jack ain't jack without a friend. We'd even be willing to pay or look at ads or something if it comes to that. Just, please, give us more Jack!

Valve Pens In-Game Ad Deal for Counter-Strike

Making the (now fondly remembered) Subway Counter-Strike ads a reality, Valve has inked a deal with the content pusher IGA. An article at GamesIndustry states that this may be the biggest in-game ad deal ever, as this still insanely popular title racks up something like '5 billion player-minutes each month' From the article: "'As the world's premier online action game, Counter-Strike's player minutes exceed its closest competitor by more than 100 per cent,' said Doug Lombardi, marketing director for Valve. 'Additionally, Counter-Strike rivals many of the current top ten watched shows on American televisions. For instance, a top ranked, one hour, weekly program garners 20 million viewers and results in approximately 4.8 billion viewer minutes per month. Conversely, Counter-Strike generates over 5 billion player minutes in the same period of time. And, nobody fast-forwards through any part of Counter-Strike,' added Lombardi."

Counter-Strike gets ads

Counter-Strike gets ads
from Game Addicts by Edwin
Don’t you just love capitalism and the commercialization of nearly everything good and noble? Most websites that started off with no sponsors have since bowed to the gods of advertising, selling pixels of their soul for the very ingredient that makes the world go round. Counter-Strike, a Half-Life mod that took the world by storm more than half a decade ago (has it been THAT long already? Gosh!), will come with in-game advertising in version 1.6. According to Valve and IGA, both companies issued a joint-statement that they will be sitting down at the table to discuss mutually beneficial opportunities (read: moolah in their pockets) in the near future.

One of the main reasons why in-game advertising is being added into Counter-Strike 1.6 would be the ready pool of audience that have reached an incredibly large size. I guess being the largest online action game in the world does have some advantages, but the fact that these advertisements are not optional will certainly detract from gameplay as in-game settings will no longer be considered to be realistic enough. Who would want to go hunt for terrorists when you have a large Coca-Cola ad staring at your face?
Will such a move pull more players into the Counter-Strike world, or will it turn people away from it? The very word advertisement strikes a taste of disgust with most computer users as it reminds them of nasty pop-ups and spam. I personally don’t think in-game advertising would work well since seasoned users are already numb to the amount of ads they are bombarded with each day. Hopefully Blizzard’s World of Warcraft will not undergo the same treatment sometime in the future.

CS Getting In-game Ads - Valve Sells Out

CS Getting In-game Ads - Valve Sells Out
December 9th, 2006 by Armin Siljkovic

It had to come at some point. In-game advertising in one of the oldest online shooters out there, Counter-Strike 1.6. Valve’s Doug Lombardi confirmed that in-game advertising, served by IGA, will appear in CS 1.6, and in CS:Source later on. He spoke to CS-nation about the ads, where he said,
“There will be some ads posted on walls in the game world, an ad on the scoreboard screen, and one in the letterboxed area of Spectator mode. Counter-Strike levels aren’t going to turn into Times Square or a Nextel Cup racecar. We have control over what ads show up in Counter-Strike and how they are presented.”
Counter-Strike is rapidly losing ground to more modern shooters like Battlefield 2, and this appears to be the worst Valve could do to the existing CS community.
Of course Valve defends it by claiming this decision was made together with the community, but that’s pure BS. No CS player would like to see in-game ads appearing all over the place. And let’s face it, just like any other game company these days, Valve follows the money. The little time I have for CS these days will certainly get lost to another game.

*SIGH* I knew this game was coming a couple of month ago. I prayed to the gaming Gods to
smite the ass-hat that thought the TV show would make a good game. But my prayers where
when unheard.. of course, people though that 'Deer hunting' would make a horrible game also
and they where proved wrong but I can't, for the life of me, see out this could be a good game.

Techdirt: Ubisoft Ditches Starforce... But Looks For A Replacement

"Contributed by Mike Friday, April 14th, 2006 @ 03:17AMA couple weeks ago an upset owner of a Ubisoft video game sued the company, claiming the copy protection scheme used on it, made by controversial copy protection software firm Starforce, opened up huge security holes on computers. While there had been complaints directed at both Ubisoft and Starforce for quite some time, it seems that it finally took this lawsuit for Ubisoft to decide to ditch Starforce completely. However, they claim that they're going to replace it with another copy protection scheme, potentially putting themselves right back into the same problematic situation. Perhaps, instead, they might want to take a lesson from some successful gaming companies that have learned that you can sell more games by not treating all of your customers as if they were criminals. "

Finally!!!! There was just too much crap floating around the Starforce product. It's just not worth it to any copy to stand behind something that has been linked to frying computer parts.
